A water tight business case With approximately 3800sqm of unused space on the roof of our Asquith manufacturing facility in NSW, a major rainwater harvesting opportunity was identified. Phase I was implemented in 2009, installing 90,000 litre tanks on 25 per cent of the unused portion of the factory’s rooftop. All on-site hard surface washing, amenities and washrooms now use captured rainwater – the installation of Phase 1 of Asquith’s rainwater harvesting project was directly responsible for a 3.2 per cent reduction in site water usage by January 2010. This, along with a number of other water efficiency initiatives implemented last year, saw a six per cent reduction in Asquith’s annual water utility charges for 2009. turning a trickLe into a torrent Following the success of Phase I of the rain water harvesting project, Phase II is now underway. This project will see Asquith’s rainwater capture capacity expanded to 483,000 litres (six times larger than the Phase I rain water tanks), thus reducing on-site water consumption by approx 35 per cent and saving 4.5 million litres of water a year. Water harvested in the new tanks will be used for Asquith’s cooling towers, which account for approximately 40 per cent of the site’s annual water consumption. Phase II is scheduled for completion by December 2010.
